How to Become a Real Estate Agent

Are you considering a career as a Real Estate Agent but not sure where to begin?

Follow the four steps below on how to obtain your real estate license from start to finish and you will be on your way to an exciting career in real estate.

Step One:  Meet The Requirements

In order to become a licensed real estate agent, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age

  2. Be a resident of the state you are applying a license for (unless seeking a non-resident license)

  3. Be a high school graduate or the holder of a certificate of equivalency

  4. Complete a 75-hour salesperson pre-license course

  5. Pass a state real estate examination

(Research your state requirements as they may differ from the list above)

Step Two: Complete 75 Hour Salesperson Pre-license Course

The next step to becoming a licensed real estate salesperson is to complete a 75-hour Salesperson Pre-license course and pass the course exam. While searching for the right real estate school, you will want to make sure that the Real Estate Institute is accredited and approved by your state’s  Real Estate Commission. Then you will want to consider if a Live class or an Online class will work best for you.   For your convenience, Blanchard and Calhoun Institute of Real Estate offers accredited and Georgia Real Estate Commission approved classes throughout the year.

Live Classes:  If you prefer an interactive more personable learning approach, our live classes will most likely be a good fit for you.

Online Classes: If you are looking for a flexible schedule, the online course can be a great option allowing you to complete the course at your own pace.

Step Three: Pass The Real Estate State Exam

With your letter of completion in hand, you will take your exam at one of the testing location options provided by your instructor.  Be mindful that this is a time-sensitive step.  You will have 12 months from the date of your passed course exam to take the state exam.   It would be ill-advised to wait too long to take the state test because after 12 months if you have not taken and passed the state exam, you will most likely have to take the course all over again.  Some states will even require you to submit fingerprints, pass a criminal background and have Errors and Omission Insurance on hand before you register for the exam which can take weeks to process. Note that not everyone passes the first time and you may need to retake the exam again; therefore, you will want to give yourself plenty of time to submit all paperwork.

Step Four:  Join A Real Estate Brokerage

Now that you have passed your exam (congratulations), it’s time to make all this official. Once you have found the perfect real estate brokerage to “hang” your license, you and the broker will submit the final paperwork with the state;  Once that paperwork has been approved your license will be issued. Considering these steps, it may be a good idea to interview and decide on a real estate broker early on in your licensing process.
